Does Transport Need Planning?

Last week five of our students took part in an Excellent Hub Cluster event based around the theme of "Does Transport Need Planning?" Students had to work as a group to plan a new transport plan for Angel Islington. This was organised by Angela Morris (EMEH co-ordinator). Five of our student took part and had a great time - thoroughly recommended - just what G+T activities should be about - self management, original thought, challenging and real deadline. Well done!

Work Experience Opportunities

We are really fortunate at the school that many students are interested in pursuing Geography based degrees at the end of A-Level. The post below may be useful for those students interested in trying to gain some valuable work experience. It was sent by Caroline Graham who works for UNICEF.

I often get asked about work experience opportunities so I’m sure you do to.  I’ve just come across opportunities at international NGO Right to play which has flexible internships (in London) where you can work for as little as 2 days a week for a mimimum of 3 months.  I thought some of the boys going on to do Geography at Uni might be interested?

Development and Brazil (A2 Development)

Was sent this great link today about Brazil and Development. It is a really interesting read, especially within the context of why the relationship between resource abundance and development is complex. The most recent international posts are very optimistic about Brazil's future, especially with the current strength of the price of natural resources. Watch a video clip here. Accessing video content

I have been really interested in trying to work out where I can access relevant geography clips. The answer seems to be growing by the day. BBC Wales has a searchable category for Geography clips. The BBC Planet Earth Explorer is absolutely quality for really interesting footage.

Global Fashion

Year nine students are starting work on producing a documentary linked to global fashion. We have had some excellent work produced in the past so we look forward to this years contributions. The clean clothes campaign website is an excellent starting point.

Globalisation of Agriculture

For this essay please try and develop your own research. There are lots of news reports out there at the moment as this is obviously a hot topic. Today the BBC had a story running about food shortages - how is this linked to globalisation of agriculture? News link here and video link. Impact of EU food subsidies on poorer countries discussed here. The use of farm labour in large plantations can be viewed here, as well as the issue of illegal migrants / gangmasters working in farms closer to home. Internationally there are some interesting links here between agriculture and work we did in development. For example the impact of Free trade agreement between Mexico and USA on farmers.
